Amritsar, August 14

A maiden meeting of the joint coordination panel comprising SGPC and state government nominated members for jointly organising events to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak was cancelled today.

The SGPC nominated members, Jathedar Tota Singh and former SGPC head Bibi Jagir Kaur, came to take part in the meeting, while Nihang organisation head Baba Nihal Singh Hariya Wela Wale had sent his representative. However, in the absence of two government representatives, the meeting did not materialise. Now, the next date of the meeting has been fixed for September 6.

After cancellation of the meeting, SGPC chief Gobind Singh Longowal expressed annoyance at the state government for not sending its two representatives for the meeting of the coordination panel.

He said as per the directions of Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, the Shiromani Committee nominated two members Tota Singh and Bibi Jagir Kaur while Baba Nihal Singh was absorbed as sikh intellectual.

He said neither the government suggested the names of its two representatives nor sent them to take part in the meeting.

He stated that two communiqués were also dispatched to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to suggest the names of their representatives.

He added that it was high time for the panel to chalk out programmes for the anniversary celebrations.

He said the SGPC had already sent a letter to the Chief Minister in this regard which remain unanswered. So a reminder was sent on August 3.
