The police in Hanumangarh on Friday evening rescued seven Nihang sewadars who were allegedly chased by a mob suspecting them to be child lifters.

It was confirmed at about 5 pm by the management of Gurdwara Lal Singh Nagar in Bathinda that they were authorised to collect grains for langar sewa, Tibbi police station incharge Mohammad Anwar said. By then the police had cordoned off the gurdwara in Peerkamdia village where the sewadars had taken shelter.

Preliminary investigation reportedly indicated that the sewadars parked their Bolero outside a gurdwara in Sabuana village and told the caretaker to announce through loudspeakers that a group had come from Bathinda to collect grains. Villagers were requested to contribute. After a few minutes, the sewadars found some children playing outside the Anganwari centre and offered fried grams to them. A villager, who noticed the Nihangs, reportedly spread rumour in the village that some child lifters had arrived.

People tried to gherao the sewadars. Sensing trouble, they got into the Bolero and escaped. Many people used scooters, bikes and tractors to chase them. They also threw stones at the vehicle. Finding that the vehicle was heading towards Tandoorwali village, chasing villagers made phone calls to residents to intercept it. However the driver of the van sped it away to Peerkamdia village and all its occupants took shelter in the gurdwara.
