Even as concerns are being raised by environmentalists as well as governments over looming water crisis in near future, there are at least three dozen marriage palaces and car washing centres flourishing in the Morinda block of the district using groundwater for commercial purposes. The area has already been notified by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA).

The CGWA notifies areas for the purpose of regulation of groundwater development where the withdrawal of water is more than 150 per cent of the replenishment. As farmers in the area resorted to intensive irrigated rice-wheat cycle, the block was notified on November 27, 2012.

According to CGWA guidelines, no permission can be granted to extract groundwater through any energised means for any purpose other than drinking water. In these areas NOC for infrastructure projects can be considered only for drinking and domestic purposes.

There are 15 service stations in Morinda town was using submersible pumps to draw groundwater for washing vehicles. Beside, seven service stations are set up in villages around Morinda town. More than a dozen marriage palaces and resorts in the block are also using groundwater for cleaning and gardening purposes.

However, no action was taken against these units despite issuing a showcause notice to the owners more than months ago in November. Morinda Municipal Council executive officer Ashok Patharia said he had joined recently and would examine the matter as soon as possible. DC Sumeet Jarangal said teams formed by the District Groundwater Advisory Committee would visit these units after the Independence Day celebrations and seal those found to be violating the guidelines.
