The Punjab government has decided to fill vacant posts in the Revenue Department from among retired patwaris. The move aims at facilitating the public, as revenue-related works in almost half the state has come to a halt.

In a letter to the Nawanshahr DC, the Revenue and Rehabilitation Department asked him to immediately fill the vacant posts of patwari from among retired patwaris. Of 178 posts in Nawanshahr, 128 are vacant. The letter states that these patwaris be hired on contractual basis, with the last pay drawn by them (minus pension and other allowances) being offered to them as remuneration.

Gurpreet Singh Kangar, Revenue Minister, Punjab, said the decision was taken yesterday, after revenue related work in almost 2,100 (of a total of 4,716) revenue patwar circles came to a halt. “We are coming up with a proposal to hire 1,300 patwaris immediately, to be brought up for approval in the next Cabinet meeting. The commissioning of new patwaris, after their training, will take some time. Till then, we have decided to take the services of retired patwaris,” he said.

Union opposes move

  • The move to hire retired staff has not gone down well with the Revenue Patwar Union of Punjab
  • Mohan Singh, president of the union, said at a time when the youngsters were unemployed, it was unfair to hire old retired patwaris
