Mohali, August 9

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took the police remand of Tariq Ahmed Lone, a narco-terrorism accused arrested in connection with smuggling of 584-kg drugs into India from Pakistan through the Attari integrated check-post.

The court of special NIA judge Nirbhow Singh Gill handed over the custody of the accused to the NIA till August 16.

On July 29, the NIA had moved an application seeking custody of the narco-terrorism accused and possession of dockets and case property from the investigating officer of Customs Commissionerate, Amritsar, and to hand over the records of the entire investigations to the NIA.

The Customs Commissionerate, Amritsar, had failed to produce dockets and case property to the NIA.

The international drug racket based in Pakistan and Afghanistan was busted with the seizure of a huge cache of drugs on June 30 this year. The drugs, worth Rs 2,600 crore, were concealed under hundreds of bags of rock salt inside a truck.

Thereafter, the Amritsar police arrested two accused Gurpinder Singh, an Amritsar-based trader and Tariq Ahmed Lone from Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir. One of the prime suspects, Gurpinder Singh, died under mysterious circumstances in the jail on July 13.
