Patiala, August 29

Two units each of the state-owned thermal plants have been shut due to maximum power generation by hydro projects and low demand as compared to last month.

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) saw an increased demand of 12,000 MW as against 11,700 MW during the past few days. The average demand in the past one week has been around 11,500 MW and is coming downevery day, with Thursday being an exception that saw it rise by 300 MW.

According to PSPCL officials, the hydro projects are supplying 1,650 MW following good rains and almost full reservoirs. Even the private thermal plants in Talwandi Sabo, Goindwal Sahib and Rajpura are running to their full capacity. Further, the state is getting 5,800 MW from the Central pool.

“We have shut two units each in the state-owned plants at Lehra Mohabbat and Ropar, following low power demand. With rains expected in the next few days, we hope that the demand will further come down. However, we have ample coal stock and arrangements to meet any power demand as for now,” said PSPCL CMD Baldev Singh Sran.

“This year, we are already planning a tie-up for supply in winters to power-deficit states, which will help us earn some money and the benefits will be passed on to consumers,” Sran added.
