A 38-year-old woman worker died, while four others were injured when the wall of an under-construction sewerage treatment plant collapsed at Kokri Vehniwal village in Dharamkot subdivision of the district, the police said here today. The incident took place last evening.

The construction work on the treatment plant of a village pond had been going on for the past many days under the MNREGA scheme.

When the women workers were digging out mud from a pit, the newly constructed wall along the pit collapsed. Bricks fell on the women workers.

One women worker, Ramandeep Kaur (38), died on the spot. Locals said her husband had died a few years back. She is survived by a 17-year-old daughter.

The villagers rushed to the spot and saved the lives of four other women. The rescue operation went on for more than one hour.

Those injured were identified as Jasvir Kaur, Paramjit Kaur, Sarbjit Kaur and Jaswinder Kaur. They were rushed to the district hospital. Doctors referred Paramjit Kaur to the DMC Hospital in Ludhiana since her condition was critical.

Village sarpanch Kamaljit Kaur and local Zila Parishad member Manpreet Singh Vehniwal have asked the state government to provide monetary compensation and a job to the daughter of the deceased woman.

The government must bear the medical expenses of the injured women and also provide them monetary compensation, they demanded.
