To curb the menace of drugs in villages, it’s finally the local residents who are now coming forward. For instance, the village-level committees have been formed one after other in three villages for this cause in Gidderbaha subdivision here, which have even got success in catching some alleged drug addicts, peddlers in the recent past.

These villages are Kotli Ablu, Mallan and Thehri. Residents here have caught 13 addicts and peddlers in the past and handed them over to the police.

Residents of Mallan village had on Saturday caught an old woman allegedly with 390 sedative pills and handed her over to the police. Similarly, residents of Thehri village in the last month had reportedly caught two people with drugs and thereafter caught their supplier.

Residents of Kotli Ablu village have caught nine people allegedly consuming/carrying drugs in less than even a month.

230 arrested in six months

  • In the last six months, the district police registered 161 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 230 persons.
  • Manjit Singh Dhesi, SSP, Muktsar, said about 34-kg opium, 282-kg poppy husk, 74,785 sedative pills and capsules, 1-kg heroin, 81 tranquiliser syrups and 2.3-qtl green plants of cannabis were recovered in this period. The drug money of Rs 25.16 lakh was also recovered.
