Two nabbed with 470 boxes of liquor

Moga, July 11

The Moga police arrested two smugglers and recovered 470 boxes (5,640 bottles) of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) from a canter in Rauli village of Moga district.

Canter driver Gurinder Singh and his associate Sandeep Kumar, both residents of Rurka village, Jalandhar, have been arrested, while two of their aides Saurav Kumar of Abohar and another unidentified person fled the spot. A sum of Rs 20,000 had also been recovered from them.

Preliminary probe revealed that the IMFL bottles carried the stickers of Naina Premium Whisky, which was meant for sale in Haryana. The consignment was smuggled into Punjab from the Saha industrial area in Ambala district through the inter-state border and was meant to be distributed in Moga district.

A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Mehna police station.

Illegal distilleries busted

  • The police arrested Gulab Singh and seized 92-kg lahan from an illegal distillery in the Boghewala Bandala Bet area on the Sutlej banks. His aides Karaj Singh and Major Singh fled.
  • The police also recovered 25-litre lahan and a bottle of distilled liquor from Mahla Kalan village. However the accused, Harjit Singh and Bhagwan Singh, fled.
