Stalemate continues, Abohar streets turn into garbage dumps

Abohar, July 10

Stalemate continued on the 13th day of strike by safai sewaks (sanitation workers) of Abohar Municipal Council.

Senior activists of some NGOs and some councillors assembled at Arorvansh Bhawan and later approached the protesting workers in the Municipal Council. They said all main roads and public places had been turned into garbage dumps and people were avoiding to visit the town for shopping due to poor sanitation. They offered to arrange a month’s pay and an equal amount as loan to purchase wheat for workers, but the action committee of the Safai Sewak Union rejected it and demanded two-month salary and wheat loan equal to a month’s wages. Rest of the dues should be paid in instalments with each month’s pay, the union demanded.

Members of the Technical Services Union, Kisan Majdoor Mulazim Talmel Committee argued with Executive Officer Gurdas Singh over failure to pay salary for six months. As the EO said salary for a month had been credited to bank accounts of safai sewaks and no more money was available, the unionists immediately locked main gates of the council complex. However the EO managed to come out through a small gate.

The workers organised a protest march in the town, shouted slogans against the council and state government. They marched to Shaheed Chowk terminal outside Sadar Bazaar and burnt effigies of municipal council officials.
