Sanitation workers call off strike

Sanitation workers call off strike

Our Correspondent

Abohar, July 12

As many as 165 “A” grade sanitation workers of the Municipal Council on Friday ended the two-week-long strike after Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Rupinderpal Singh discussed their problems with a five-member action committee at a marathon meeting here. The workers have been ruing that they have not been paid by the MC for the past six months.

Notably, the action committee had earlier turned down the requests made by some councillors and heads of NGOs to end the strike.

The ADC announced that two-month salary had been credited to their bank accounts besides releasing loan to arrange wheat. Reminding them of their moral duty to keep the subdivisional town clean, the ADC motivated the sanitation workers to call off the strike and gear up to clean the roads and residential areas.

Taking cognisance of the complaints made by the workers against Executive Officer Gurdas Singh alleging improper behaviour, the ADC told him to improve his style of work.
