Ropar villagers stop more trucks

Ropar villagers stop more trucks

Tribune News Service

Ropar, July 9

Following the dilly dallying attitude of the district police in keeping a check on heavy vehicles plying on the Nurpur Bedi-Bunga Sahib road, residents of adjoining villages continued their naka till yesterday night and “seized” over 25 more vehicles.

At one such naka, a tipper driver fled the spot. However, locals with the help of the police intercepted him on the way. The driver told the policemen that he was following the orders of his employer who was the personal assistant of a senior politician from Ropar district.

When asked about the documents of tipper to prove that the vehicle was owned by the politician’s PA, he said it was a second-hand tipper and still the documents were in the name of its former owner. He claimed that the PA owned three such tippers. He also called his boss on phone and asked the policemen present on the spot to talk to him. The cops, however, refused to take the phone from him.

Villagers had been intercepting vehicles since July 7. A ban was imposed on plying of such vehicles on this road by the Deputy Commissioner as it has badly damaged the road. However, tippers and big truck carrying sand and gravel from stone crusher zones of Algran, Agampur and Khera never stopped using this road to avoid toll plaza near Kiratpur Sahib.
