After getting an interim bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court on medical grounds, an accused in a drug trafficking case tried to flee the country using a duplicate passport. He, however, is absconding now.

On June 29, the Intelligence Bureau sleuths nabbed Gurvinder Singh of Ferozepur city while boarding a flight to Canada and handed him over to the police. Later, he again got bail from a local court and is absconding since then.

As per information, 3.5-kg opium was recovered from Gurvinder on March 19, 2018, after which he was booked and arrested under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act. Earlier too, he was booked in a land dispute case on October 27, 2017, in which the police had also issued a lookout circular against him. But Gurvinder got bail from the court of Additional Session Judge in Ferozepur in the case.

In the drug case, he again managed to a get bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court on medical grounds. He was also asked by the court to surrender his passport to the Sessions Court in Ferozpeur, which he deposited. However, he got a duplicate passport on the pretext that his old one got lost. Gurvinder even managed a visitor visa for Canada and was about to leave the country from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on June 29 last month, but was caught.

When contacted, Mukhwinder Singh Chhina, IG Ferozepur Range, said he had directed the police to initiate a legal action against Gurvinder. Now, another case under Sections 420, 193, 465, 467, 468, 471, 120B IPC and Section 12 of the Passport Act, 1967, has been registered against him in Ferozepur.
