Sangrur, July 7

The families of eight ‘chitta’ addicts, who have tested HIV positive, are in a shock. The wife of one of the addicts is pregnant while a state-level boxer is also suffering from HIV.

Area residents suspect that there are many more HIV positive cases because many chitta addicts had been sharing syringes after taking it from the Sangrur-Barnala road near the ROB, where medical waste was being dumped.

Sangrur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ghanshyam Thori today directed Red Cross authorities to release Rs 1 lakh to the families of HIV positive addicts to arrange transportation to bring them to the hospital. He has also written to Punjab Pollution control Board for quick action against hospitals which were dumping medical waste near the ROB.

“He was fine till around eight months back, but after he came into contact of some chitta addicts of the village, he also started injecting it. His wife is pregnant and after getting information about his HIV positive status, we don’t know how to convince her to undergo a test,” said 60-year-old labourer and father of an addict. “Till last year, he was playing boxing and also won a silver medal in a state competition. But suddenly, some chitta peddlers made him an addict. I request the Punjab Health Department to admit all addicts immediately. Otherwise, they will ruin more lives,” said a government employee while pointing towards a medal won by his HIV positive son.

DC Thori said, “Our teams are conducting door-to-door surveys and special camps will also be organised to conduct the required tests. But we need the support of area residents and they must inform us and convince addicts to undergo tests and de-addiction course.” SP (Investigations) Harinder Singh said their teams were conducting raids to arrest the drug smugglers.
