Judicial remand for key accused in Attari haul

Amritsar, July 11

The prime accused in over 532-kg heroin and 52-kg assorted narcotics haul, Amritsar-based Gurpinder Singh and Handwara-based Tariq Ahmad Lone were sent back to judicial custody by a local court today.

Both were produced in the court by the Amritsar (rural) police after the expiry of their remand.

Soon after investigation by the Amritsar Customs Department, which seized the heroin at the ICP, Attari, on June 19, both were sent to judicial custody till July 14, when in between the Amritsar (rural) police procured their remand.

Another Amritsar-based transporter Jasbir Singh, who allegedly used to ferry contraband, is already in the police custody.

Besides him, local trader and clearing agent Ajay Gupta, Parminder Babbar (brother of Gurpinder), Parvinder Singh (Batala), Luv Sharma (Amritsar) and Deepak Kansal Bobby (Kadian, Gurdaspur) are also under the police remand.

Meanwhile, sources said the Amritsar Customs Department had sought the remand of Ajay Gupta, but it was refused by the court.

Earlier after naming 20 suspected drug traffickers, including three Pakistani nationals, the Amritsar (rural) police arrested the five persons in connection with the heroin seizure.
