ITI faces staff crunch, courses discontinued

ITI faces staff crunch, courses discontinued

Surinder Bhardwaj

Fatehgarh Sahib, July 8

The state’s number one ITI at Bassi Pathana is in a mess as various trades have been closed due to the shortage of staff. Students who come from far-flung areas of the state to get admission in the trade of their choice had to face great harassment, when they come to know that the trade has been discontinued as there is no instructor.

Manoj Banda, president, Hindu Organisation, who has taken up the case of the ITI with the higher authorities, said the shortage of staff and discontinuation of trades had hampered the skill development programme of the government and it showed the non-seriousness of the government in providing skill training to the youth for self-employment. He said the posts had been lying vacant for long and the trades like carpenter, electronic, motor mechanic, diesel mechanic, refrigerator and AC had been closed and no admission was made to these courses.

Charanjit Singh Channi, Minister for Technical Education, while presiding over the Republic Day function at Fatehgarh Sahib, had announced to set up three new ITIs in the district, one each in the Fatehgarh Sahib, Bassi Pathana and Amloh constituencies, while those already running are almost non-functional owing to the paucity of the staff.

Jaswant Singh, Principal, ITI, Bassi Pathana, said the ITI got the first ranking in the state. For a good ITI, space, staff and machinery were required. They both had space and machinery but didn’t have sufficient staff as 50 per cent technical and non-technical posts had been lying vacant for long. He said admission was made online and students had been admitted in 12 trades in which the staff was available.
