Chandigarh, July 13

The government today directed all brick kiln owners in the state must to adopt zig-zag high draught technology within four months.

KS Pannu, Director, Mission Tandarust Punjab, said under Section 5 of the Environment Protection Act 1986, an order was issued in May, prohibiting the operation of brick kilns based on conventional technology after September 30. A reminder to the same has been issued under the mission to all deputy commissioners.

He said the traditional design of brick kilns was not only energy intensive, but also posed various health hazards and environmental issues. But, with the help of modified design there was a sizeable reduction in carbon emission, thus controlling environmental degradation. “Besides, there is direct saving of precious resources (clay and fuel) to the tune of 20 to 30 per cent. In fact, the industry has reported 25 per cent savings in coal amounting to Rs 15 lakh per kiln in one season on the adoption of induced draught zig-zag technology,” he added.

He said the technology cost around Rs 20 to 25 lakh per kiln, but it was easily recovered in a year by way of improved quality of bricks and lesser use of coal.

He said there were 2,854 brick kilns in Punjab, of which 1,300 had moved towards introduction of modern technology. “Nearly 700 have completely shifted to the new technology, while others are in the process. However, 1,550 kiln owners have not initiated any move towards introduction of this technology,” he said, warning them that after the slated deadline the kilns without zig-zag technology would not be permitted to run in the state.

He said if need be after September 30, transportation of coal supplies to such defaulters would be cut off.
