Bathinda, July 11

The district police today seized 10.67 lakh sedative tablets from a drug smuggler in Maur. The accused already has seven cases registered against him.

Addressing a press conference, Bathinda range IGP MF Farooqui and SSP Nanak Singh said, “We had received a tip-off about a consignment of drugs reaching there from Ludhiana. Following this, a police team set up a naka at Ramnagar Chowk in Maur. The police nabbed the smuggler, Sunil Kumar alias Sonu, when he was transporting a consignment of 1.56 lakh tablets in his Hyundai i20 car.

“We interrogated him and raided his godown before recovering a huge quantity of sedative tablets. The total recovery that we have made stands at 10.67 lakh tablets.”

The IGP said the accused was on their surveillance for the past many days. At least seven cases were pending against him and he was sentenced to 10-year jail in one of them. He was out on bail at present.

Farooqui said they were hoping to bust his entire network, right from the source of sedative tablets to his distribution points. He said it was a major success which showed that the police were making concerted efforts to nab big smugglers.

He said the accused was running his illegal drug trade on the basis of a cancelled licence of his chemist store. He said the licence was issued in the name of one Narayan Das, who was booked in a case following the recovery of 50,000 tramadol tablets from his possession in February this year. The licence was issued in 2016 and cancelled in 2018.
