Patiala, June 11

With the just two days left for the paddy season to begin, farmers are facing acute shortage of skilled labour. However, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) had claimed that farmers won’t suffer as far as electricity supply is concerned.

With a record number of tubewells running in agricultural fields to pump out underground water, the demand of power is expected to reach 13,500 megawatts.

According to the PSPCL officials, the agricultural tubewell consumption of power during the 2018-19 paddy season was 7,299 million units, which was free of cost for farmers as the subsidy on this was paid by the Punjab Government. However, the power demand is expected to rise further due to the addition of more connections and rise in rates.

With the temperature increasing by the day, the demand for power in Punjab has already reached around 10,000 MW and is expected to rise further in case the rain spell is delayed.

“The PSPCL is ready to provide eight-hour daily power supply for agricultural purposes from June 13 along with 24-hour supply to all other consumers,” said Baldev Singh Sran, chairman and managing director, PSPCL.

“Though the anticipated demand is 13,500 MW, arrangement has been made for 14,000 MW,” said Sran.

Even the coal stock at all thermals is sufficient. There is a stock for 32 days at Lehra Mohabbat, 48 days at Ropar, 25 days at Rajpura, 15 days at Talwandi and 26 days at Goindwal Sahib. Also, as compared to 13,66,160 tubewells installed during the 2018 paddy season, it will be 13,78,960 this time.
