Streamline working of Abohar MC: Panel

Streamline working of Abohar MC: Panel

Abohar, June 10

The working of the Municipal Council (MC) has come under criticism due to its alleged failure in resolving issues efficiently.

Municipal Council Ward-8 member Arun Narang, who had submitted his resignation after he was elected a legislator from Abohar in March 2017, has now been informed by the Local Bodies Department that the resignation was accepted on May 31.

As per rules, a byelection for a ward that falls vacant needs to be held within six months. The State Election Commission had announced to conduct byelection for Ward-22 due to demise of Congress councillor Saroj Rani this month.

Council president Pramil Kalani of the BJP had quit office on March 10, 2018, but his resignation has not been accepted so far. The department has also not convened a meeting to elect the vice-president after Akali Dal councillor Ashok Ahuja completed his term in 2017.

The Municipal Council Retired Employees’ Welfare Association has blamed the department for its dilly-dallying attitude in resolving the issues related to the municipal council. Once reputed as an ‘A grade’ body, the city’s civic body is now facing severe financial crunch.

The MC has got no full-time executive officer and engineer for the past two years. This has affected the day-to-day functioning resulting in a delay in payment of salary to staff as no elected or government official is in the office to monitor recovery of taxes.

The former employees’ association has urged Minister for Local Bodies Brahm Mohindra to streamline the working of the department and order action in the scam relating to the sale of property, etc, which had cropped up in the council in 2010.
