Patiala, June 13

With the start of the paddy sowing season on Thursday, the maximum power demand in Punjab touched 11,141 MW, a rise of almost 1,900 MW from Wednesday. This resulted in the state overdrawing 224 MW from the grid.

Last year on the first day of the paddy season, the power demand had increased by 1,363 MW and touched 10,184 MW. The thermal plants at Lehra Mohabatt and Ropar have started extra generation to meet the power requirement during the season.

On Wednesday, two thermal units at Ropar and one unit at Lehra Mohabatt started supplying electricity. These units were lighted up on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, afternoon two more units were also started to meet the increase in the demand.

Following thunderstorm on Wednesday evening, the power supply was hampered in some districts. However, barring a few areas, the power supply was restored within two hours.

The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited has made arrangements for supplying extra power as the maximum demand this year is expected to reach 14,000 MW. Last year, the maximum demand during the season was 12,638 MW.

The state’s thermal generation capacity, including the private sector is 6,110 MW. The share in Central projects is 4,580 MW while the installed hydel power capacity is 1,161 MW. The state also has the solar capacity of 859 MW. Besides this, it has share in the BBMB power houses and has also made arrangements for power supply under arrangements with other states.
