The Medical Council of India (MCI) has finally allowed two state-run medical colleges to retain 100 MBBS seats in the upcoming session, ending uncertainty triggered by staff shortage in these institutes.

The MCI Board of Governors has approved the admission of a fresh batch of students against the increased intake from 150 to 200 to Government Medical Colleges (GMCs), Amritsar and Patiala, for the upcoming session.

Both the GMCs were given permission to retain their seats after the council considered a compliance verification report, along with observations of a member of the undergraduate expert group-appointed Board of Governors. Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Satish Chandra’s undertaking, given last week, also helped arrive at the decision.

The decision came two days after the government promoted 41 Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) doctors to the post of Assistant Professor — a development that helped overcome the staff shortage that could have cost the state some 100 medical seats.

The MCI had asked the state government to deal with the staff shortage in the two GMCs — 45 Professors in Patiala (22 per cent) and 32 in Amritsar (16 per cent) — if it wanted to retain its current intake strength.

Ever since the MCI asked the state to resolve the issue of faculty shortage in the two medical colleges, the government was in an overdrive mode to overcome the problem.

In fact, the MCI had pointed out the faculty shortage -- one of the conditions to retain 100 MBBS seats -- in both the GMCs.

Meanwhile, Satish Chandra said, “The approval is for the upcoming academic session. However, we will get a permanent nod from the MCI for 200 MBBS seats in the two government colleges.”

Notably, the MCI had increased the MBBS seats from 150 to 200 in Government Medical Colleges of Amritsar and Patiala during 2014-15. However, a five-year review conducted by the MCI in February this year found faculty shortage in both the medical colleges.
