Residents of Anand Nagari and Nanak Nagari here had a harrowing time due to overflowing sewage today.

All shops remained closed, vendors stayed away and children had to wade through dirty water to go to school.

Vandana, a local, said political activists who moved with folded hands till Sunday and made tall promises were not approachable today when people suffered due to overflowing sewage. This issue had been persistent for the past decade, but neither screening chambers were repaired nor machines deployed to remove garbage from the pipelines and manholes, she said.

Sonia, a resident, claimed that the Municipal Council had completely ignored the colonies which were occupied mostly by migrants from West Punjab.

“Sukhera Basti and neighbouring colonies have narrow lanes. Even the extended residential areas too are not properly planned. The council and the officials of the Punjab Water Supply Sewerage Board were contacted many times, but to no avail,” Sukhwant Singh, another local, said.

As the staff in the civic bodies was availing rest day in lieu of polling duty that they performed on Sunday, the problem stood unattended till evening.
