Patiala, May 16

The Media Certification and Monitoring Committee, Patiala, has issued notice to 15 candidates and their supporters for uploading content on Facebook without seeking proper approval from the authorities.

Two Facebook pages are under the scanner of the state cyber cell after their case was forwarded for a probe following objectionable contents. Meanwhile, Rs 1.60 lakh has been added to the expenditure of various candidates for posting their advertisements on Facebook without due approvals.

Initial probe by the police confirmed that two social media sites were running a campaign in support of a particular candidate. “People would get a text that in case they want to support a candidate of the Congress, they should click the link. When people clicked the link, it took them to these Facebook pages that showed Congress in poor light,” said District Public Relations Officer Ishwinder Grewal.

These two Facebook pages being run by anonymous account handlers were issued notices for violating norms. “One of these pages was conducting exit polls and, therefore, was referred to the State Cyber Crime Cell,” Grewal said.

District Electoral Officer Kumar Amit said six candidates had been granted 42 approvals for uploading election-related content on Facebook. “AAP candidate Neena Mittal was the first to be issued a notice for uploading objectionable material. She apologised in writing after which she was issued warning as per the Election Commission guidelines,” he said. Shiv Sena candidate Ashwani Kumar was also issued a notice and was issued a warning after he apologised.

“Nawan Punjab Party candidate Dharamvira Gandhi was issued a notice and two reminders for uploading a campaign song on Facebook without prior approval of the MCMC. He was also issued a warning after he gave an apology,” Amit added.

Meanwhile, some supporters have also been issued notices.
