The warning of the Chief Minister to his party colleagues against factionalism seems to have no impact on Congress leaders in this area. Two groups of the Congress — one led by district Congress president Brinder Singh Dhillon and another by Punjab Speaker Rana KP Singh — organised separate rallies at Nurpur Bedi on Monday and Tuesday.

In order to keep both the factions in good humour and avoid damage to his prospects of winning, party candidate Manish Tewari had to address both the rallies within 24 hours in the same village.

It was yesterday that district Congress president Brinder Singh Dhillon, who had contested the Assembly election on party ticket unsuccessfully, organised a public meeting in the village. Though Manish Tewari reached there to address the gathering, none of the Congress leader from the Rana group, including local MLA Amarjit Singh Sandoa, who has defected from the AAP to Congress recently, attended the meeting.

A day after it, today Tewari, accompanied by Punjab Speaker Rana KP Singh, addressed another public meeting organised by Sandoa and other Congress leaders in the village. Even the pictures of district Congress president Dhillon were missing from the banners displayed by the organisers on the occasion.

Senior Congress leader and former Cabinet minister belonging to the area Ramesh Dutt Sharma was also ignored by both the factions apparently due to his deteriorating health. When contacted, Sharma said though he was unable to go to such meetings due to ill health, his family members would like to participate. They, however, were not even being informed about the party’s rallies.
