BJP wary of support from Assembly seats with SAD

The BJP is losing sleep over support to its candidate Sunny Deol from five seats allocated to the SAD.

In Qadian, where Sewa Singh Sekhwan ruled the roost when he was with the SAD, the BJP is struggling to find his alternative. It is unlikely that Sekhwan, who has formed the SAD (Taksali), will ask his cadre to vote for the BJP. In Dera Baba Nanak, MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has neutralised his SAD rivals to the extent where the party has been left with no leader who can motivate workers to vote for the BJP. Former minister Sucha Singh Langah was a force to reckon with once, but now after getting involved in a sleaze video controversy, he has gone into political hibernation.

In Batala, the relationship between sitting SAD MLA Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal and the BJP has always remained frosty. The MLA and the BJP went separate ways just ahead of the municipal committee elections in 2015 and the hostilities still continue. Likewise, in Gurdaspur, Gurbachan Singh Babbehali, former SAD MLA, and the BJP cadre are at daggers drawn.

“With CM’s directive of securing leads from their respective seats playing heavily on the minds of the sitting legislators and with the SAD cadre virtually deactivated, Deol may not have smooth running in the SAD segments,” said a former minister.
