Sangrur, May 17

Amid a triangular contest, the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency, which is known for springing up new surprises every time, remains the only hope for the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab.

The Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency has total nine Assembly constituencies, out of which five — Dirba, Sunam, Mehal Kalan, Bhadaur, Barnala — are with the AAP, while Sangrur, Dhuri, Malerkotla are with the Congress and Lehragaga with the SAD.

During almost a month-long campaign, it was Sangrur where first trend of asking questions from the candidates started in the very beginning. The maximum brunt was borne by the Congress candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon.

Though he asked votes for the development done by the Congress government in the state, but he was put in the dock over the issue of employment, crisis-ridden farmers and various ‘anti-people’ policies of the government. These protests also indicate to the fact that the Congress government needs to address the issues of employment and agrarian distress with more sincerity.

Like some other constituencies of Malwa, where sacrilege had created serious problems for SAD candidates, here the issue didn’t create much trouble for Parminder Singh Dhindsa. He appealed for votes in the name of Modi’s development plank and national security. His personal reputation will be an advantage for him.

However, despite serious problems in the party, the AAP has high stakes in Sangrur. It seems the AAP’s top leadership is also aware of the fact that Sangrur is their only hope. Perhaps that is why, the party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal spent maximum time in the Sangrur constituency.

Once again Bhagwant Mann’s oratory magic is seen, just like the last elections, when he won by over two lakh votes. During a rally, Congress candidate Kewal Dhillon said he would ask Mann to perform during his victory function on May 23.

Not much time has left to know, who will hold the victory procession.

No sacrilege trouble
