Patiala, April 8

Facing over half a dozen criminal cases, gangster Kanwar Randeep Singh SK, who had joined the Congress last week in the presence of Preneet Kaur, was today shunted out following a report on The Tribune web portal.

Insiders in the Congress said their leader who had been in touch with the gangster for the past few months was instrumental in making him join the party. “On Saturday he was made to join the Congress and support Preneet Kaur by Sanaur Congress leaders without Preneet being briefed about his criminal antecedents,” they said.

As per police records, SK was arrested in 2016 along with gangsters Gurpreet Singh Gopi, Surinder Singh Manga, Gurcharan Singh, Jatinder Singh and Amrik Singh.“The gang leaders, including Gurpreet Singh Gopi, had attacked a Jail Superintendent and escaped from the jail. They face over 30 criminal cases and carried Rs 50,000 award for firing at a student leader inside Panjab University to get the elections cancelled,” said the police.

On Saturday, Kanwar Randeep Singh SK, who claimed to be president of the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU), joined the Congress following recommendation of Harinderpal Singh Harry Mann, in the presence of Congress Patiala candidate Preneet Kaur. The decision of his joining created fissures within the Congress cadre after his criminal past was ignored by the party leadership.

“Our party has zero tolerance for criminals getting into politics through nefarious ways. The gangster in question had joined the party after recommendation by Harinderpal Singh Harry Mann as part of a group of some 1,500 university students,” said Preneet Kaur.

Preneet said the gangster had evidently found an easy way to foray into politics by projecting himself as a student and political activist.

Meanwhile, former Cabinet minister Bikram Majithia said the Congress was hell bent to win the polls by hook or crook. “Randeep is out on bail in a case where he helped another gangster escape from police custody in Ropar. The Congress needs self-introspection,” he stated.
