Uphill task for AAP’s Bathinda candidate Baljinder

Uphill task for AAP’s Bathinda candidate Baljinder

Chandigarh, April 12

Talwandi Sabo MLA Baljinder Kaur, who heads AAP’s women wing, will take on rebel Sukhpal Khaira in the Akali citadel of Bathinda. The SAD is likely to renominate Union Minister and sitting MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal while the Congress is still weighing its options, with Sangrur MLA Vijay Inder Singla among the many contenders.

Kaur describes it as a “fight between a commoner and powerful political families.” She says she will reach out to AAP rebels. The party had won five of the nine Assembly segments comprising the Bathinda Lok Sabha seat in 2017. But Maur MLA Jagdev Singh Kamalu and Mansa MLA Nazar Singh Manshahia are backing Khaira, who is Punjab Democratic Alliance (PDA) candidate.

Rupinder Kaur Ruby from Bathinda (Rural) and Budh Ram from Budhlada are with Kaur, who herself represents the Talwandi Sabo Assembly segment. With her nomination, AAP has signalled it would field its best candidates against PDA candidates in the state.

Kaur is confident of a victory, despite the fact that Khaira has already hit the campaign trail, covering up to 10 villages every day. Observers say AAP has made a good move but with the Congress and SAD both eyeing AAP vote bank, it will be no cakewalk for Kaur.

The SAD is spreading the word that voting for AAP is wasting one’s vote.

Sidhu to fight Khadoor Sahib seat

  • AAP has fielded ex-serviceman Manjinder Singh Sidhu, 33, the party's youth wing head, from Khadoor Sahib
  • State president Bhagwant Mann said candidate for the Ludhiana seat would be announced soon
  • Sidhu will fight Jagir Kaur (SAD), Jasbir Singh Dimpa (Cong), Gen JJ Singh (SAD-Taksali) & PK Khalra (PDA)
