Amritsar, April 6

Akal Takht has announced to constitute a Sikh heritage commission to supervise the restoration, renovation and repair of over 50-year-old gurdwaras, Sikh architecture, art and paintings.

The move comes after after a number of delegations met Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh asking him to make foolproof arrangements so that no incident like in which historic “darshani deodi” of Darbar Sahib in Tarn Taran was demolished happened again.

The Jathedar said the commission would have two architects and conservationists, two historians, a horticulturist, a specialist of Sikh art and painting conservator and others. He said the SGPC’s probe report into the demolition of “deori” reached his office and he endorsed its recommendation of filing a case against the guilty. He accepted that some SGPC officials also connived with the “kar sewa” group and action would also be taken against them.

Earlier, senior SC lawyer HS Phoolka met the Akal Takht Jathedar and requested him to form a commission to safeguard Sikh heritage, architecture, art and paintings.

A delegation of the SAD (Taksali), led by its president Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, and delegates of the Alliance of Sikh Organisations handed over memorandums to the Akal Takht Jathedar. They demanded action against erring people who pulled down the historic “deodi” and pleaded for constituting a heritage commission.
