Six women farm workers were hospitalised as they fell ill reportedly after drinking contaminated water last evening. The doctors referred them to Faridkot where Kulwinder Kaur (60) died today. The condition of others — Veerpal Kaur, Parwinder Kaur, Manpreet Kaur, Pammi and Palwinder – was said to be critical. They were admitted to the ICU, sources said.

The victims were working in the fields of RD Bishnoi, an Akali Dal leader, at Sardarpura village here. They belonged to Bahadurkhera village and were reportedly hired by Bishnoi, who is also state president of the Jeev Raksha Bishnoi Sabha, to harvest wheat crop. Some pitchers were filled with water for the workers.

The sources said it appeared that water was highly contaminated or poisonous. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Poonam Singh and Balluana DSP Sandeep Singh visited the hospital last night and sought details about the patients from Senior Medical officer Dr Amita Chaudhary and Dr Suresh Kamboj. Inspector Abhinav Chauhan has been told to initiate an investigation.

Deputy Commissioner Manpreet Singh Chhatwal has directed the Health Department to provide free treatment to the victims. A preliminary compensation of Rs 50,000 will be given to the family of the deceased.

The samples of water from the pitcher and temporary reservoirs have been taken for chemical examination, the sources said.
