Amritsar, April 7

To apprise Assam-based Sikh children of Sikh heritage and culture, the SGPC has decided to open dedicated institutions over there.

The Sikh Representative Board Eastern Zone in Assam has been entrusted with the task of identifying the land whereas the construction of the school building and its administration will be looked after by the SGPC. This was stated by SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal during the gurmat programme organised by the Sikh Representative Board and local residents of Guwahati to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.

Longowal said Sikh children need to be encouraged towards learning mother tongue “Gurmukhi” and Sikh values from the school level. “It is our duty to apprise the present generation about Sikh tenets, Guru’s philosophy and teachings. Special initiatives have been chalked out by the SGPC in this direction. Establishing dedicated schools in Assam is one such endeavour,” he said.

Welcoming the SGPC’s announcement, Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh viewed that in the prevailing materialistic world, only Guru’s philosophy could present a succor.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi, SGPC chief secretary Dr Roop Singh, Dharam Parchar Committee member Sukhwarsh Singh Pannu and secretary Balwinder Singh Jorasingha were also present on the occasion.
