Jalandhar, April 5

Facing an Income Tax inquiry since he was taken into custody along with Father Anthony Madasserry by the Khanna police, Jalandhar resident Harpal Singh today said he did not remember having seen any bank vehicle meant for cash collection parked in the generalate house at Partappura when the raid by the Khanna police took place last Friday.

Son-in-law of retired AIG (Prisons) Surinder Kaur (90) and a resident of Chhoti Baradari here, Harpal Singh claims that he had parked his car on the premises but he did not remember having seen any bank vehicle there. He even said he did not see any bank staff in the house even though Father Anthony told him that bank personnel had come with cash counting machines on the first floor of the house.

Owner of the building in which Sahodhaya Partnership Firm of Father Anthony is being run in the Ladhewali area here, Harpal Singh showed his rent agreement for five years signed by Father Anthony’s partner, Father Jose.

Harpal claims, “It was less than 10 minutes after I had reached Partappura that the raid happened. Father Anthony was calling me there since 2.30 pm. He told me that he wanted me to attend to a mentally disabled child in the ashram on his premises.”

Owing an LED lights business, Harpal said, “The people at Father Anthony’s place call me “doctor ji” since my wife is a dentist and imparts dental care to the priests, Brothers and ashram inmates when required. I go only when I am asked to come and I never knew that I would land in for such big trouble. Reaching there, I saw Father Anthony sitting in a room on the ground floor with a cash bag open in front of him. I asked him why there was so much cash. It was then that he told me that cash was being counted by the bank people on the first floor. I never knew that he was running such a big business from the office that I rented out to him.”

He further narrates, “I was told to hand over my purse, mobile phone and keys and made to immediately sit in the police vehicle by the cops.”

Regarding four other people who were taken into custody along with him, Harpal said, “I still do not know who they were. I did not get a chance to interact with them.”

All of them along with Father Anthony had gone together to appear before the Income Tax team along with a CA on March 30 afternoon, a day after the raid.
