Amritsar, April 8

The ongoing agitation by sacked SGPC employees took an ugly turn when a youth today tried to commit suicide by consuming some poisonous substance.

Sarhusan Singh (20), who allegedly took celphos tablets, was admitted to Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital, where his condition is said to be critical.

A resident of Tarn Taran, Sarhusan was posted as a safai karamchari on a daily wage of Rs 175. He was among 523 employees recruited during the tenure of former president Kirpal Singh Badungar, but were terminated after a change of guard in March 2017. A majority of these employees were employed on non-teaching posts in Sikh body’s educational institutes.

The employees have been on an indefinite strike in front of the SGPC headquarters at the Golden Temple complex since March 28.

An SGPC official said a team of doctors had been deputed to take care of the victim. “We are providing best medical treatment him. Efforts are being made to resolve the issue. They were offered reinstatement provided they withdraw the court case and lift the dharna, but in vain,” he said.
