In a multi-pronged strategy envisaged for eradication of drugs in this border district, the Ferozepur police have started mass public contact programme to spread awareness on drug abuse.

Under the programme, policemen cover 60 to 70 villages every week at each subdivision level.

Sandeep Goel, SSP, said the police had launched a virtual war against drugs in this region under which right from breaking the drug supply chain to counselling of youths to shun drugs were being taken up.

“We have formed teams at each police station which visit villages and meet the affected youths every day,” Goel said, adding that besides preventing inflow of drugs from Pakistan, its peddling from across the interstate border has also been checked.

“Following our sustained efforts, there is an increasing consciousness among the youth about ill-effects of drugs,” the SSP said, adding that the police was also helping village panchayats to provide sports facilities to channelise the energy of youths in right direction.

“We encourage the villagers to share information about the drug suppliers and keep it confidential which has given them confidence to share inputs with us,” said the SSP.

“My life has changed. I am more in control now and for the past three weeks, I haven’t taken any drug. I am now working and feel much better,” said a villager. “We have subscribed to live radio channel which telecasts Gurbani and speakers have been put up all over the village,” said Lakhbir Singh, a sarpanch.

“Though it will take little more time to totally eradicate this menace, the scenario is much better now,” Goel said, adding that several chemist shops which earlier used to sell drugs have been shut down due to strict policing.
