Days after facing severe criticism over using freedom fighter Rajguru’s photo in place of Sukhdev in Punjabi textbook, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has been hit by another controversy. This time the PSEB has published an incorrect hymn of Guru Nanak in another Punjabi textbook.

The error has been made in the Class X textbook “Sahit Mala”. A popularly known hymn of Guru Nanak, “Sau kyun manda akhiye”, has been wrongly published in the textbook.

Following the mistake, once again teachers have got a chance to attack the government for hurting the religious sentiments of people of Punjab. They said on the one hand, the government was celebrating the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak and on the others hand, his hymns were not being taken seriously and misspelled.

A retired Superintendent of Punjab Education Department, Gurmel Singh, said, “According to Sikh followers, each word in Guru Granth Sahib is revered and cannot be tampered with. The government should apologise.”

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Surjeet Singh Garhi said, “The board has not learnt from their past mistakes. We strongly condemn the mistake by the education board and demand an apology from the government.”

Official spokesperson for the PSEB Raminderjit Singh, said, “The PSEB Chairman has already ordered to make correction and put it on the board website until any further decision of the board members.”
