Gurdaspur, April 6

A day after Ajay Thapar, vice president of district Hindu Shiv Sena (Thackeray), was gunned down at Puranashala, 14 km from here, the police were groping in the dark about the whereabouts of the five accused even as the deceased’s kin refused to get the post-mortem conducted to protest “police inaction”.

The accused have been identified as Harmeet Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Sukhraj Singh, Deep and Sandeep Kumar. An FIR under Section 302 IPC has been registered against them.

Swarandeep Singh, SSP, said, “Three of them were riding a motorcycle when they opened fire at Ajay, while the other two provided them with logistical support. I have formed five teams to crack the case. We are following several clues to their whereabouts.”

Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujwal and the SSP held talks with Harvinder Soni, vice president, Punjab Hindu Shiv Sena (Thackeray), at civil hospital where Ajay’s body was lying. The police wanted the autopsy to be performed, but the kin refused permission.

While Soni claimed that three of the accused were proclaimed offenders (POs), the SSP said only Sukhraj was a court absentee.

The SSP said old enmity was the motive behind the murder. Soni said he had sent an SMS to the SSP, saying that “he has information that some suspicious people were seen at Puranshala between 6 pm and 7 pm on April 2.”

“I had informed the SSP that the persons might be having an illegal pistol in their possession. Three days later, the same people killed Ajay at the same place,” he claimed.

The SSP said, “Following the message, a manhunt was launched and a police team was sent to the spot to track the accused.”

A relative of the deceased claimed that Ajay was all set to leave for Spain where he had got a job.
