Amritsar, April 6

The National Martyrs Memorial Committee-led rally, organised to mark 100 years of the Jallianwla Bagh massacre, reached the garden here today. The Jalandhar to Amritsar rally, comprising students, ex-servicemen and educators, traversed 250 km on bikes and buses.

Himachal University Chancellor HS Bedi gave a brief history of the massacre. Former ministers Darbari Lal and Laxmi Kanta Chawla were among others present on the occasion.

“Our idea was to mark the centenary of the significant event in our history. We wanted to come on April 13 but due to large-scale events of the state and central governments marking the day, we did not get permission. So, we chose April 6 as it was also the day when in 1919, nationwide protests began against Rowlatt Act, which led to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre,” said Anoop Vats, president of the National Martyrs Memorial Committee.

Laxmi Kanta Chawla interacted with students said the youth should always remember and respect the martyrs of the nationalist movement and never forget their roots. The rally began early from Jalandhar Cantonment starting from the Colonial House, a historic building where General Reginald Dyer used to reside.
