The role of senior officers is under the scanner after the police failed to trace two ASIs missing along with huge cash seized during a raid at a priest’s house in Jalandhar. The police have issued a lookout notice against the two cops — Joginder Singh and Rajpreet Singh — and suspended them.

The SIT probing the matter has asked the crime branch to conduct raids and alert airports so that the cops cannot leave the country. Unconfirmed sources, however, claim that informer Surinder Singh has been apprehended and his arrest can be made official anytime. “We will not spare anyone found guilty in this case,” said an SIT member.

Official sources said Khanna SSP Dhruv Dahiya was called by the SIT in Mohali on Saturday and was asked to explain his position. He was asked specific questions pertaining to his role in dealing with police cat Harinder Singh alias Babbu 12 bore, who was allegedly instrumental in getting the erring ASIs posted in Khanna. Dahiya claimed that he had stopped interacting with Babbu ever since he came to know about his criminal record.

Dahiya told The Tribune that he had gone to Mohali to attend a meeting of the SIT, but claimed that he was not asked to join the investigation. SIT members, however, confirmed that the SSP was quizzed.

Sources say that a Glock pistol issued to Babbu 12 bore was taken back after the Jalandhar raid, but he was never summoned. “What is shocking is that a woman constable was provided to Babbu for security and he was made part of the CIA team that would raid criminals or grill them,” the sources said, adding that the Khanna police used to get maximum allocation of secret funds, for which no account had to be maintained.

The ASIs allegedly vanished with the money after the raid on the premises of Father Anthony Madassery in Jalandhar on March 29.

The case brings to the fore the clout criminals-turned-cats-turned-informers enjoy in the department. The Khanna police are suspected to have been taken for a ride by two such informers. The sources say police cats Surinder and Harinder Singh Babbu, who were provided protection, used to hold meetings at the SSP’s office and even issued directions to junior cops.

Meanwhile, SAD leader Bikram Majithia questioned the silence of the Election Commission on the issue. “The money is possibly with some Congress leader and could be misused during the elections. I am surprised that the state government and the EC are silent on the issue and no action has been taken against the SSP who continues to serve at the same station even as his handpicked officers are missing with the cash,” he said.

Punjabi Ekta Party (PEP) president Sukhpal Khaira blamed the police. “The FIR against the two ASIs and the informer is a mere eye wash to protect certain senior officers,” he alleged.

Curious case of missing cash

  • A team of Khanna police raided Father Anthony’s house in Jalandhar following a tip-off by Surinder Singh
  • The team headed by Inspector Gurdeep Singh returned with Rs 9.66 crore, while Surinder and ASIs Joginder Singh and Rajpreet Singh went missing with Rs 6.66 crore
  • Insiders claim Inspector Amanpal Virk, ASI Joginder Singh, Rajpreet Singh and Ramandeep Singh were brought to Khanna on request by SSP Dhruv Dahiya
  • Sources say police cat Harinder Singh Babbu 12 bore was instrumental in getting the erring ASIs posted in Khanna
