In Ferozepur, SAD adopts wait-and-watch policy

Ferozepur, April 7

After two times sitting Akali MP Sher Singh Ghubaya switched over to the Congress recently following differences with party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal juxtaposed with the announcement of Sunil Jakhar as Congress candidate from Gurdaspur, both parties are in dilemma over picking candidates for this seat.

According to SAD sources, the Akali Dal is adopting a “wait-and- watch” policy for this seat and will wait for announcement by the Congress before finally opening its cards.

Last time, SAD’s Ghubaya had defeated Jakhar by a margin of 31,420 votes. As per speculations, while SAD is planning to field Sukhbir from Ferozepur as his Assembly constituency Jalalabad is part of this Lok Sabha segment, the Congress is struggling to take a final decision due to internal strife and divergence of opinion about the selection of “winnable” candidate as it has been on losing spree here since 1985.

At the moment, the fight for the ticket seems to be between Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Raminder Singh Awla and Ghubaya, who claims to have joined the Congress with the assurance of the ticket. While Sodhi, Cabinet minister and four-time MLA from Guruharsahai, is being supported by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, on the other hand Awla, who has been the former Punjab Youth Congress president, is being helped by Jakhar and Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala to secure nomination.

Meanwhile, Ghubaya, who had already started meeting his supporters to drum up support, seems to be on defensive following sting operation by a news channel where he allegedly claimed to have spent crores during previous polls.

Since, the SAD has not announced the candidate for the Bathinda seat, the possibility of Harsimrat Badal switching over to Ferozepur can also not be ruled out. The third possibility is former Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon in case no one from the Badal family decides to contest from this seat. In case Harsimrat comes here, the senior Badal may jump into the electoral arena from Bathinda, claims party sources.

Talking to mediapersons here today, Sukhbir said the party would take decision on this seat soon, adding that in case the party asked him to contest; he would take the fight head-on. Meanwhile, old war horse and two-time MP from Ferozepur Mohan Singh Phalliawala, who belongs to the Rai Sikh community, has joined the Congress last week.
