Chandigarh, April 10

Governor VP Singh Badnore today declined to attend the birthday celebrations of the Queen of England, being held here tonight by the British Deputy High Commission. The Governor had been invited as a special guest.

In a letter to Deputy High Commissioner Andrew Ayre, the Governor expressed his regret, saying the celebrations were being held on the eve of the centenary of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, thus he would not be able to attend. “The United Kingdom and India have had cordial relationship after India got Independence since 1947. We have been supporting each other in diverse fields of mutual interest like business, trade, education...” says his letter.

In the letter, the Governor says it was yesterday that British minister Mark Field had expressed “deep regrets” and assured the House of Commons in England that the issue pertaining to apology for the massacre “was in progress”. “Even British Prime Minister Theresa May has termed this tragedy as a shameful scar,” reads the letter, saying it may not be appropriate for him to be part of the celebration as Jallianwala Bagh is an emotive issue in Punjab .
