Jalandhar, April 14

Former Chief Parliamentary Secretary and former Akali MLA from Balachaur Chaudhary Nand Lal died of cancer at a private hospital in Mohali on Sunday. He was 74.

A Gujjar leader, Nand Lal had won the Assembly polls four times since 1997. He had contested in the 2017 poll too but lost to Congress’ Darshan Lal Mangupur. His cremation will be held on Monday.

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh expressed grief over the demise of Nand Lal. In a condolence message, the Chief Minister described him as a leader of the masses with the qualities of head and heart, who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the downtrodden and overall development of his area. He said Nand Lal would be remembered by one and all, especially in the Balachaur area, for his strong connect with the locals at the grass-roots level.

Meanwhile, Akali leaders, including former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, party president Sukhbir Badal and former minister Daljit Singh Cheema, said Nand Lal’s demise had left a void in political circles.

Nand Lal is survived by two sons.
