Gurdaspur, April 11

The BJP is groping in the dark as far as naming its candidate for the Gurdaspur parliamentary seat is concerned, while the Congress candidate, Sunil Jakhar, has already started campaigning.

Jakhar held a gathering on Sunday in the BJP-dominated seat of Sujanpur, which sent out a clear message that he is seeking to marginalise the influence of the BJP in the Hindu-dominated seats of Sujanpur, Bhoa and Pathankot in the first phase of his campaign.

Observers say this development could put the BJP further on the back foot even as the party has to yet shake off the nightmare of the 2017 bypoll which saw its candidate Swaran Salaria being routed by a massive margin of 1.93 lakh votes.

Congress leaders claim that Jakhar would also be seeking to ride on the territorial advantage the party enjoyed with its legislators holding sway on seven out of the nine Assembly seats of the parliamentary constituency.

The BJP think tank has formulated a plan wherein the party will be holding a 70 per cent of its rallies in Qadian, Dera Baba Nanak and Gurdaspur. These Assembly seats have been given to the Akalis as part of the seat-sharing agreement and it is here where the SAD has almost been wiped out.

Senior BJP leaders claim that sooner the party names its candidate, the better it will be. With Jakhar gaining early ground, some BJP leaders are said to have impressed upon the high command to make public the candidate’s name immediately. “If we delay the name of our nominee, we may be pushed to a point where we will find it difficult to recover the lost ground,” said a leader.
