CEO says act tough against code violators

Chandigarh, April 16

Chief Electoral Officer Dr S Karuna Raju on Tuesday held a video conferencing with all the Deputy Commissioners, Commissioners of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police to take stock of ongoing preparations for the smooth conduct of the Lok Sabha polls.

Issuing directions to all civil and police officers for ensuring the implementation of the code of conduct in letter and spirit, the CEO said any laxity in imposing the model code would not be tolerated. Dr Raju instructed the officers that the process of surrendering arms and ammunition should be completed on the expeditious mode as till date 95 per cent licensee arms had been surrendered in the state.

The CEO also directed that the food to the poling staff to be deployed at polling stations would be provided by the district administration and it should also be ensured that no political person provided food to the polling party. There should be arrangement of adequate chairs, fans and potable water at polling stations for the convenience of voters, he added.

Dr Raju also directed for the installation of CCTV cameras outside major liquor dumps for the surveillance of movement of liquor. If any liquor vend violated the prescribed timings of opening and closing, requisite action should be initiated, he said, adding that a close tab should be kept on the liquor factories in various districts.

On noise pollution, the CEO told the authorities that steps had already been taken in this regard and the officers in districts could take necessary steps in coordination with PPCB officers. — TNS
