Sangrur, April 8

Members of various organisations today announced that they would vote for the candidate who would support their demand for legalising opium and poppy husk cultivation in the state.

They said they need assurance from the politicians that they would help them get permission to start farming of traditional and recreational drugs. “We have the right to raise our voice for our cause. Our main demand is to seek permission to start growing opium and poppy husk. We want our MP to raise this issue in Parliament,” said Gurjant Singh, a Sangrur-based farmer.

Representatives of Kisan Khushal Welfare Society (KKWS), Kirti Union, Team Insaaf and some farmers associations today met Sangrur Deputy Commissioner and submitted their memorandum in this regard.

“Till the time recreational drugs like opium and poppy husk were legal, there was no menace of synthetic drugs. Problems started after these soft drugs were banned and smugglers began targeted the youth by making them addicted to heroin, chitta, smack and habit-forming tablets,” said Mahinder Singh, a farmer from Dehlon.

The farmers had come prepared with detailed studies. Some shared data of addicts, who died within two-three years of starting taking drugs, while others had details of addicts of traditional drugs who managed to shun drug addiction.

“The addiction of opium and poppy husk could easily be given up, but synthetic drugs are very addictive and can prove fatal. I have data to prove this,” said Satinder Singh, another farmer.
