Batala, April 7

A former Akali sarpanch allegedly killed a Congress sarpanch by running an SUV over him, triggering tension in the area today. The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Qadian police station.

The Akalis were quick to pin the blame on local Congressmen. However, sitting Congress MLA of Qadian Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa refuted the allegations and said the case “should not be given political contours”.

“The Congress has nothing to do with the incident. I term it as one of the most unfortunate incidents of my political career. Law will take its own course,” said the legislator.

SSP Opinderjit Singh Ghuman rushed to the spot and defused tension.

Former Akali sarpanch Mittar Pal Singh of Daulatpur had a long standing enmity with the present sarpanch, Inderjit Singh.

Akali Dal supporters, led by Mittar Pal, asked Inderjit and his brother-in-law Navdeep Singh, Congress sarpanch of Riar Patti village, to come to their village to hammer out a truce “so that peace could be maintained ahead of the forthcoming elections”.

The police said it was Navdeep who wanted the warring leaders to unite.

When Mittar Pal, Inderjit and Navdeep were holding talks, supporters of both SAD and Congress had a verbal duel. The blame game turned violent, with both parties throwing brickbats at each other, following which Inderjit Singh asked his supporters to return to their homes after pacifying them.

When Navdeep was leaving Daulatpur, he was allegedly ambushed on the road by Mittar Pal and his loyalists and beaten up. Inderjit tried to intervene but in vain.

Meanwhile, Mittar Pal and his accomplice Jhujhar Singh sat in his Bolero and allegedly ran it over Navdeep, killing him on the spot.

Navdeep was rushed to the Batala Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead. A case under Section 302 of the IPC (murder) has been registered against Mittar Pal and his supporters.

Verbal spat turns ugly
