Sangrur, April 15

Two persons, including a former president of the Sangrur truck union, were injured when a rice miller allegedly opened fire on them on the Sunam road. The police have started an investigation.

Truckers said their former union president Mintu and a youth, Karn, were going towards Sunam. Around 11 am, when they reached near the focal point area, a rice miller, who wanted to get a contract for the transportation of paddy, allegedly opened fire on them and fled.

“Both Mintu and Karn have suffered injuries in their stomach. We have boycotted the tender process for the transportation of paddy. We will start a protest in front of the DC office from Tuesday if the police fail to arrest the accused,” said Bipin Sharma, the district president of the truckers' association.

The injured persons were taken to the Sangrur Civil Hospital, where Mintu was referred to the Ludhiana DMC while Karn was referred to a Patiala hospital due to their critical situation. Meanwhile, truckers blocked Bhagat Singh Chowk around 2 pm. They lifted the blockade after the Sangrur DSP assured them of requisite action.

“Our teams have gone to record the victims' statements. We will register an FIR thereafter,” said DSP Satpal Sharma.
