The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released a list of 118 candidates who have been barred from contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

These potential candidates have been banned under Section 10 A of The Representation of the People Act, 1951. The Act provides for disqualification of a candidate in case he/she had not submitted election expenses of the previous elections within the time stipulated by the ECI.

The commission has published their names in its official gazette and barred them from contesting elections for the next three years from the date of order. Talking to The Tribune, a senior Congress leader said, “A majority of the names on this list are of covering candidates, who might not have contested the elections.”

Meanwhile, a name that made the election office scurry for facts was that of Jagir Kaur from Bholath tehsil. She was one Jagir Kaur from Ramgarh village. This happens to be the constituency from where senior SAD leader Bibi Jagir Kaur had contested the Assembly elections. Bibi Jagir Kaur belongs to Begowal village. The CEO confirmed that Jagir Kaur on the list was not SAD leader Bibi Jagir Kaur.

Meanwhile, the state government will not release any convict on parole, mainly drug offenders, without the approval of the CEO, a communication from the ECI said. CEO Dr S Karuna Raju said if parole to an offender became necessary, advance intimation was needed to be given to the police and drug law enforcement agencies, including NCB zonal units.

Payment of ex gratia

  • The ECI has issued detailed instructions regarding the slabs of payment of ex gratia compensation to family of polling personnel in the event of any mishap.
  • An amount of at least Rs 15 lakh will be paid to the next of kin of the official in the event of death while on election duty. If the death is caused due to any violent acts of extremist or unsocial elements, the compensation would be Rs 30 lakh.
