Sangrur, March 13

Accusing district manager Gurvir Singh of demanding money from them, field staff of Markfed has started an indefinite protest in front of the district office here.

Employees of other districts also joined the protest and announced to intensify their agitation in coming days if the department failed to take strict action against the district manager. However, Gurvir denied the allegations and threatened to take legal action against the employees for levelling “baseless allegations”.

The employees under the banner of the Markfed Field Employees Union alleged that Gurvir had been demanding money from them on one pretext or the other and whenever anyone refused, he boasted of his connections.

“He is not accepting cash from the field employees, but has opened a bank account in the name of Niyamat Abbas and is asking the field employees to deposit cash in the said account. Our protest will continue till strict action is taken against him,” said Baljinder Singh, a union leader.

The union has demanded that Gurvir’s movable and immovable properties should be thoroughly investigated by a high-level committee. The union has also demanded that his foreign visits of the last five years should also be investigated.

“I was abroad for the last one-and-a-half month. Two other seniors are interested in getting this post and they have incited employees against me. How could I ask for money by sitting abroad? I will file a defamation cases against those who are levelling baseless allegation against me,” Gurvir said.
