High Court rejects former SSP’s bail petition

Chandigarh, March 28

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed as infructous senior Punjab police officer Charanjit Singh Sharma’s plea for prior notice if he was required for interrogation in cases related to incidents of sacrilege.

The High Court had earlier directed the state and its functionaries to give seven days’ prior notice to Moga’s former Senior Superintendent of Police, but soon after recalled the order and issued notice to the government on his plea. He is currently under arrest in relation to the Kotkapura firing case.

Appearing before the Bench, Punjab Additional Advocate-General Rameeza Hakeem had raised objections to the prior notice order before arguing that the petition was listed in supplementary list and relief should not be granted to the petitioner without hearing the state because the petitioner was already under arrest.

“In view of above, earlier order, directing the respondents to give seven days’ prior notice to the petitioner in case he is required for interrogation in the cases as prayed for, is recalled and the matter shall be heard afresh,” Justice Ramendra Jain had ruled.

Just about three years after police fired at Sikhs peacefully protesting in Kotkapura against the incidents of sacrilege, the Justice Ranjit Singh commission of inquiry had indicted police officers. It ruled that use of force at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan was unwarranted, uncalled for and not needed at all.
